General information

Psychic Influence was born out of astonishment at the absurd: a former president convicted by a court of law for “bribery by psychic influence”? We live in times when concepts like justice, legality, and the rule of law are being emptied of meaning and manipulated for partisan purposes. Our goal is to shed light on a silent and sophisticated form of persecution: lawfare, or how courts can be used as political tools to destroy opponents and dismantle transformative projects.

This documentary is not just a story about Ecuador, nor about a single individual. It is a warning. It is a mirror. A narrative that speaks to any country where justice can be weaponized instead of serving as a shield. Because when the State turns justice into spectacle, what erodes is not only an individual’s rights, but the democracy we all share.

We believe in critical thinking, the right to dissent, institutional transparency, and the urgent need to tell the stories others choose to silence. For us, documentary filmmaking is a way of creating memory—a way to give voice to the hidden and the overlooked.

That’s why we need you: to help us complete this film, share it widely, and spark debate where it’s most needed. Because telling this story is not just about making a film—it’s about shining a light on a place where darkness prevails.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Psychic Influence is a feature-length documentary that reveals how those in power can manipulate the justice system to silence dissenting voices. Through the extraordinary case of Rafael Correa, former president of Ecuador, who was convicted for “psychic influence,” the film uncovers the phenomenon of lawfare—the use of legal systems as instruments of political warfare.

What sets Psychic Influence apart is its rigorously investigative approach, combined with a visual narrative that adopts the tone of a cinematic thriller. The film goes beyond denouncing injustice; it invites reflection on a critical issue that few are addressing. It features exclusive testimonies, expert analysis from jurists and political scientists, and an international perspective that connects the Ecuadorian case to other examples of judicial persecution across Latin America.

Project Objectives:

* To raise awareness of lawfare as a real threat to democracy.

  • To document and contextualize the legal case against Rafael Correa.
  • To connect this phenomenon with similar processes in other countries.
  • To promote critical thinking and civic debate.
  • To denounce the partisan use of judicial institutions.
  • To distribute the documentary through festivals, cultural centers, and social media.
  • To advocate for due process and an independent judiciary.

Why this is important

The idea for Influjo Psíquico was born out of the shock at the absurd legal charge that led to Rafael Correa’s conviction. As filmmakers drawn to stories that deserve to be told, we were struck by the growing phenomenon of justice being weaponized as a political tool. This is not about ideology—it’s about the normalization of persecution within the very institutions meant to uphold the law. Correa’s case, and the bizarre charge of “psychic influence,” struck us as a powerful metaphor for a rising trend: lawfare.

This project is intended for everyone who believes in democracy as a common good—for those who defend human rights, critical thinking, and freedom of expression. It also speaks to students, lawyers, journalists, educators, and activists who seek to better understand the mechanisms of power and its limits.

We want to spark a broad conversation—one that crosses borders and languages—and to restore the documentary film’s power as a tool for awareness and resistance.

Team and experience

Psychic Influence is a project led by Milyuna Historias, a Spanish audiovisual production company with experience in political and social documentaries. Our previous work, Petro (Mattison, 2023), about the rise of Gustavo Petro in Colombia, received an Honorable Mention at the Slamdance Festival (Utah, USA, 2024).

The team is led by Alejandra Cardona (director), Ana María Pinar (writer), and Idoya Barrabés (producer)—three professionals with experience in international projects and a strong commitment to cinema as a tool for transformation. We are also supported by experts such as lawyer Aitor Martínez and political scientist Arantxa Tirado.

We have a solid technical infrastructure in place, with a significant part of the filming already completed in several countries (Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Israel, Venezuela, Belgium…), as well as partnership agreements with post-production studios and independent distribution networks.

We are now looking to build a community around the project to complete the final post-production phase and ensure that this story is heard where it matters most: in the public debate.
