Frequently Asked Questions

Plenty of you have been asking for more news! So in response to your petitions and some frequent questions about Bhoreal we have received, we have decided to publish in advance our FAQ section. All these questions (along with others) will be also published in our landing page (coming soon). Here it goes!

  1. What is Bhoreal?
BHOREAL is an open source interface that allows to control all types of hardware and software.

  2. Who is Bhoreal for?
Bhoreal is an appealing tool for musicians, DJs, VJs and visual artists. It is also useful for hackers and creative DIY people’s projects.

  3. What can I do with Bhoreal?
You can use Bhoreal to trigger audio samples, video loops and lighting cues; as sequencer, synthesizer and rhythmbox; as remote control, automation trigger and even to control robots. You can also set up Bhoreal in standalone mode as algorithmic and generative controller, mathematical simulator, game interface and low resolution LED display.

Actually... You can use Bhoreal for any type of application you can imagine!

  1. What are the differences between Bhoreal and other controllers?
Bhoreal is Open Source so you will be able to write your own firmware to work with any protocol. The fact that it hasn’t got limitations in terms of programming allows to emulate any other device.

Additionally, the new Bhoreal devices (that will be produced in limited editions after the campaign) will introduce new features and an innovative hardware in comparison with the earliest prototypes and other similar products.

These new features include: SMD RGB LEDs system with integrated chipset - therefore being incredibly fast and flicker-free (a common pitfall for many commercial controllers); ATmega32U4 Microcontrollers and integrated HID bootloader: Wi-Fi integrated module and wireless communication; High capacity lithium battery; Pads especially designed and customised for the project; High quality Corian and wood; High quality finish; Made in Barcelona.

  1. What software can I use?
You can use Bhoreal with several software platforms. It is multi-protocol, so you can use Bhoreal for controlling practically every software for music composition and visual creation: Ableton Live, Reaktor, Max, Pure Data, Modul8, Resolume, Processing, VVVV, Open FrameWorks, Quartz Composer, Cinder, etc.

  2. Which protocols does Bhoreal use?
Bhoreal can work through three different communication protocols: Serial, MIDI and OSC (Open Sound Control).

  3. Which operating systems are supported?
Bhoreal is Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS and Android compatible.

  4. Are the pads pressure sensitive?
The pads aren’t pressure sensitive. They are switches that activate the pixel and interact with the software, which sends a colour feedback to the correspondent pad.

  5. What are your future plans?
We are already thinking about new designs including faders and digital encoders. In fact by now we’ve got the components available, ready for a testing process. It will take some time to complete the development but we are working on it!

In parallel, the community is now working on software apps that will enable Bhoreal to work in stand-alone mode as an instrument. This will allow to use a host with a virtual instrument, which will be physically controlled by the hardware interface.

Mainly we are working with Max and Pure Data to develop these apps, which will be available both for laptop and smartphones.

  1. Where can I get one?
At the moment you can only get a device via the undergoing crowdfunding campaign on Goteo.org: http://goteo.org/project/bhoreal

The objective of this campaign it to raise the necessary funds to develop the first limited edition of Bhoreal devices. This first series will be available in the months following the end of the campaign.

  1. Will you ship internationally?
Yes. As long as you're willing to assume the additional costs for shipping, customs and taxes associated with each country.

  2. Can I become a developer?
Yes. Collaborations within the user's community are a key part in the development of the project, you can contact us at info@bhoreal.com

  3. Can I organize a Bhoreal workshop?
Sure, just send a proposal with a brief description of the activity you would like to organize to workshop@bhoreal.com

  4. How can I access the documentation?
All the documentation related to the project will be published after the end of the campaign, as soon as the Bhoreal devices are sent to the backers. Active collaborators and backers choosing a Bhoreal device during the campaign will have access to all technical documentation once it is ready.

  5. Who is behind Bhoreal?
Bhoreal is a project developed by MID, an interactive design studio based in Barcelona and lead by a group of artists, designers, musicians and creative professionals specialising in engineering, interactive design and new media. More info here: http://mediainteractivedesign.com/en/

  6. Do you have an official website apart from Facebook and Goteo?
We are working on it. We hope it will be available in a couple of weeks... We will keep you updated!

  7. How can I get in touch with Bhoreal?
